Notes for Cora Ethel Davis
Cora Davis (b. Jan 1887, d. after 1947) was my great-grandmother's half sister. She (and two of my
gr-grandmother's youngest sisters) were orphaned in 1898 and were sent to the Rose Orphan's home in Terre Haute, IN. I have all these records photocopied. She was placed with Gertrude Dildine and her son, Thomas, for assistance with their farm in Prarieton, IN (SW Vigo Co.). Cora and Thomas were married in 1906 (I don't have my records at the moment, so I'm not sure of the date). I have quite a bit of info on Cora and would be happy to share. The Rose orphanage records show that Cora is admitted, in addition to Laura and Anna Snodgrass. I'm at work (on break) and don't have the records, but one of them is placed with Marinda's brother, William Headlee, a blacksmith, in Parke County. Cora is placed with several homes before being placed with Gertrude Dildine in Prarieton. Cora married Thomas Dildine in 1906 in Vigo Co., IN. I believe in 1908, he purchased land in North Dakota, and they moved there. In ND, she began writing a column for a newspaper and eventually wrote at least two books, "Through the Years with Polly" and another one that I can't remember at the moment. In the 1940's, she was living in Kellog, MO. In 1947, she was in Terre Haute and read several selections from one of her books to a group of children at Maplewood Church. My mother was there and remembers meeting her. E-mail me and I can get the Rose Home records to you.
