Notes for Abraham Dodderer
3rd. Margaret (or Peggy) Wintermute (J. G.--P.--II.) daughter of Peter
Wintermute and Esther Rhodes, was b. Aug. 5, 1778. She
was m. to Abraham Dodderer Oct. 2, 1795. (Ancient
History, as published in the Sussex Register, says she
was married by Rev. Jacob Senn, a minister of the Reformed
Church, in 1796, but I accept the first date as
correct.) He was a brother of Henry, who married her
sister, Alice. Abraham was b. Feb. 16, 1771. 4th Esther, (J. G.--P.--II.--I.) daughter of Margaret Wintermute
and Abraham Dodderer was b. Feb. 8, 1797;
named for her grandmother. She was m. to Jacob Simmons,
by whom she had four children, three boys and one
girl. Esther d. in Sussex County.
4th. Charles Rhodes, (J. G.--P.--II.--II.) son of Margaret
Wintermute and Abraham Dodderer, was b. Oct 23, 1798.
He m. Sarah Lanning, by whom he had two children, a
boy and a girl. Charles d. in New Jersey.
4th. Jacob, (J. G.--P.--II.--III.) son of Margaret Wintermute
and Abraham Dodderer, was named for his grandfather
on his father's side. He was b. Nov. 2, 1800, and
was m. in New Jersey to Sarah Sterling, by whom he had
four children, two boys and two girls. He d. in Washington,
Iowa.
4th. Lydia Dildine, (J. G.--P.--II.--IV.) daughter of Margaret
Wintermute and Abraham Dodderer, was b. Nov.
28, 1802, and bears the paternal grandmother's family
name. She was m. to Elijah Drake, and was the mother
of four children, two boys and two girls. She d. at Sweetland
Centre, Iowa, Aug. 6, 1880.
4th. Alice, (J. G.--P.--II.--V.) daughter of Margaret Wintermute
and Abraham Dodderer, was b. May 3, 1805;
named for her mother's sister. Was m. to James Beatty
in New Jersey, and was the mother of six children, all
boys. She d. May 9, 1890, in Binghampton, N. Y.
4th. Henry, (J. G.--P.--II.--VI.--Twin--VII.) twin son of
Margaret Wintermute and Abraham Dodderer, was b.
(???) 9, 1807; named for uncle. He m. Elinor Shipley in
New Jersey, and they were the parents of six children,
three boys and three girls. He d. Nov. 14, 1887, in
Grandview, Iowa.
4th. Abraham, son of Margaret Wintermute and Abraham
Dodderer, and twin of Henry, was b. Dec. 9, 1807, and
d. in childhood.
4th. Joseph Wintermute, (J. G.--P.--II.--VIII.) son of Margaret
Wintermute and Abraham Dodderer, was b. July
11, 1810. He was m. in New Jersey to Sarah Youmans,
by whom he had seven children, three boys and four girls.
He d. in Louisa County, Iowa, June --, 1884. Was named
for his mother's brother.
4th. George Wintermute, (J. G.--P.--II.--IX.) son of Margaret
Wintermute and Abraham Dodderer, was b. in Sussex County, N. J., May 11, 1815, and the early years
of his life were spent near Swartswood. He m. Effie J.
Predmore, of Stillwater, Mar. 18, 1837, Rev. Mr. Dunn
officiating. She was a daughter of Daniel H. Predmore.
To them were born five children, all daughters. He was
named for his mother's oldest brother. He attended
Lafayette College, at Easton, Pa., and in his younger days
conducted the Park House at Port Jervis, N. Y.
His various removals were first to Middletown, N. Y., in 1845; to Port Jervis in 1848, and finally to Iowa City, Iowa, July 18, 1855, where he resided until his death. While there he was engaged in the insurance and real estate business.
He served as vestryman twenty-five years, and as Justice of the Peace continuously from 1861 to 1897, with the exception of two years. He empaneled the first colored jury in the United States, June 8, 1869--all black men. In politics he was a Democrat. His wife d. Dec. 26, 1893. He changed the spelling of his name to Dodder, dropping the final syllable "er." He was Curator of the State Historical Society for many years. Was a Mason and a Sir Knight Templar. Throughout a long and busy life he has enjoyed the confidence and good will of his fellowtownsmen, and his memory will long live in their minds and affections. His death occurred Jan. 5, 1899, aged 83y., 8m. and 4d. He was the son of a soldier of the war of 1812, and a grandson of a soldier of the American Revolution. The memory of this venerable man with his great heart and generous spirit, his genial ways and love of mankind will live long in the minds of Johnson County pioneers, and the younger generation as well. Their five children were:
