Amos had been out making hay, but he unhitched his horses and went into the
house when it began to rain. After the rain quit his mother wanted him to go
dig some potatoes. He said he needed to go back to the hay field as soon as
possible. He went back out and both he and his horse were struck by
lightening and killed. He was about 20 years old at the time of his death. (From

He actually was a little older than Ms. Moody thought. He was age 23 years, 5
months, and 14 days old when he died. He had not yet married.
