Caption on picture:
"Family of Johann Hucke:
Father - Johann Hucke, Mother- Martha Elizabeth Dittmar (mama's mother)
Children shown: August, Gertrude, John, Conrad, Martin
Taken in Germany, 1877" written in Grandma D's handwriting on the back of it. So this makes the photo of Grandmother's mother (Sophia Elizabeth Hucke)'s parent's family. The caption cannot be entirely correct, however, in the order of the children shown and perhaps the date.

Johann and Martha's youngest child, Martin John was born in 1877. He looks to be about 2 in the picture so I would date the picture as 1879. The picture looks to be a copy of an original, and perhaps a date of 1879 on the back of the original was misread as 1877 when transfered to the copy. August was the eldest male child b. 1861, and must be the tall one in the back. Sophia Elizabeth (Grandma Ds mother) was b. 1863, two years younger than August. Gertrude was born in 1860. The girl in the picture would either be a 16 year old Sophie or a 19 year old Gertrude. The other daughter isn't in the picture. As for the other children, John August was born in 1872 and would be the one on the left, Conrad Henry was born in 1874 and would be the one on the right, and Martin John was born in 1877 and would be the one at his mother's knee

When Johann and Martha Elizabeth married, they lived in the town of Cassel and had 80 acres outside of town where they raised a variety of produce: corn, wheat, rye, barley; they also had hogs, sheep, cattle, etc. In 1884 the whole family except daughter Gertrude moved to the US via NY.

"DEATH NEAR DUNNIGAN
The Passing of an Old and Respected Citizen

John Hucke, an old and respected resident of Northern Yolo, died at his home two and a half miles from Dunnigan at 8 o'clock Sunday evening. He had been ill several months and death was the result of a complication of ailments. The deceased was a native of Germany and 80 years, 8 months and 8 days old. He came from Germany about thirteen years ago and located near Dunnigan, where he has since been engaged in farming.

The wife of the deceased died a short time after the arrival of the family in Yolo county. The survivors of the family are one daughter and four sons, Mrs. John Auwärter lives in Sacramento County, August Hucke resides near Plainfield, John Conrad and Martin Hucke live near Dunnigan.

The deceased was a good citizen, an obliging neighbor and an affectionate and indulgent father, and his death is deeply deplored by all who know him.

The funeral will take place from the residence of John Hucke, a nephew of the deceased, in Woodland, at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon."

Had gone to CA because Martha’s half brother, Henry, the son of Adam Konrad Schaumloeffel, had written a letter with glowing reports about Woodland. Martha was isolated and her heart was broken after moving to CA
