‘M. J. Hucke, Vetran Yolo Driver, Marks 90th year
Woodland - M. J. Hucke, who arrived in Yolo County when automobiles were yet to appear and paved streets were a rarity. marked his 90th birthday anniversary Wednesday in his home at 413 Court Street where he has lived since 1904.
Hucke, clear eyed and spry, still holds an unrestricted driver’s license and has no problem wheeling his 1958 model car through Woodland traffic.
The nonagenarian arrived in Yolo Co 81 years ago from his native Germany. His parents farmed west of Yolo.
Hucke recalled that he bought his present home for $1,400, but has spent $10,000 remodeling it.
He grew up on a farm but followed a number of trades and occupations before he retired 15 years ago. He remarried and celebrated 15th wedding anniversary this year with his wife, Frieda.
When he moved to Court Street it was a dirt street and very little of Main Street was paved.
He enjoys tending a garden of brightly colored flowers in the front yard of the family home where he can be seen much of the time.
Hucke’s children are June Hogaboom, an Elk Grove teacher’ and sons, Herbert of Santa Clara, and Raymond of Sacramento.”

Naturalization witnesses: John Hucke and Paul Solomon

Martin John was the grandfather of my ex-husband.   He continued to keep me as a part of the family when Raymond Charles and I divorced.   Ray was not well welcomed after that.  My sons and I visited Martin and Freida every Sunday after church until he died.Martin was a very respected man in Woodland.  Very stern and business minded.  He was very bossy to his wife(SO) but they seemed to love him very much.  He didn't ever show that he was cruel.  He adored my sons and was always very loving to them and to me.  Freida was a jewel.  One would go far to find a sweeter lady.  She was just more then words can say.,
