The following obituary appeared in the July 12, 2002, edition of the
Lewiston (Idaho) Morning Tribune:

Ernest R. Burnett, 85, Lewiston

Our Lord and Savior called Ernest R. Burnett home at 4 a.m. Thursday,
July 11, 2002, at Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Clarkston. He was a
Lewiston resident and was 85.

He was born to Virgil and Wylla Dildine Burnett Jan. 29, 1917. He
attended school and worked on the family farm in the Palmer Valley near
Elgin, Ore.

He joined the Army in 1942 and served in the 1st Armored Division in
North Africa, then in Italy until the war ended in 1945.

On April 15, 1947, he married Hazel Denny Stephens, who survives him at
the family home in Lewiston. Ernie retired as a dozer operator for
Potlatch Corp. in 1980. He had worked in the Pierce-Headquarters area
for 30 years. He enjoyed music, dancing, hunting and camping.

Ernie is survived by his wife, Hazel in Lewiston; a son, Delmont
Stephens of Orofino; three daughters, Jean Lycan of Dixie, Idaho, Gail
Hagen of Benton City, Wash., and Ernestine Swank of East Wenatchee; and
one sister, Willa Carper of LaGrande, Ore. Fifteen grandchildren, 24
great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister and a
son.

With Dad as our root, we have filled the branches of our family tree
with his love and tenderness. Dad, you will be dearly missed. We will
see you again over there.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Malcom's
Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel in Lewiston. The graveside service is at 11
a.m. Monday at the Nezperce City Cemetery with John Hahn officiating.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Craigmont American Legion Post 38.
