Notes for Joshua B Allen
One statement says, "Joshua Allan and his son Barnes came from Scotland to Virginia, from there to Fort Pitt (now Pittsburg) thence up the river to what is now Hepzibah or the Allen Farm, five miles from Clarksburg (WV)." He resided in Winchester, Virginia before going to Harrison County, VA/WV, to make his home. He was probably influenced in his decision to go to Harrison Co. on account of his daughter, Sarah, having married Aaron Smith and settling there. It is said he went from Pennsylvania to Winchester, VA. He is referred to as a Scotsman. Allan is the Scottish spelling of Allen. Email of 4/21/00 from David G. Allen indicates that Joshua was born in the Trenton, NJ area, not Scotland.

He took up 350 acres of land on the west fork of the Monogahela River adjoining the land of John Simpson to include his settlement made in 1775, and a pre-emption right to one thousand acres adjoining (p. 32, History of Harrison County). His will was inv. 23 Nov. 1810, Harrison Co. (Will Book 1, p. 443; WV Wills, Vol. 2). Have copy of Power of Attorney filed 16 Oct. 1798 (Harison Co. Deed Book, No. 3, p. 232).

His wife was Elizabeth, as given by descendants, but was her maiden name Barnes? - Charlotte R Heartmeyer
