Letter written to Col. Henry Haymond on 20 Sep 1909 by James F. Allen re his grandfather, Barnes Allen: Sometime in the early 1780's, while Barnes was away watching a deer lick, his wife, who was alone at the time, saw a small party of Indians approaching the cabin...she hid in a large beech tree, The Indians set fire to the cabin. The next day Barnes and a neighbor by name of Shinn tracked and killed the Indians. (Source: History of Harrison Co., WV by Henry Haymond, 1910, p. 144-145).
