Notes for Catharine Bernard Rose
‘Catherine Rose was English, very prim and strict. Muzzie (Carrie Proctor Dildine) said she was a very cold woman. It is said that she didn’t approve of hanging underwear outside on the line to dry so people could see it, although someone said it was better to show that you had underwear than none at all. With ten children, perhaps there was no time to laugh or be gay. She must have been a brave person though. One day, when Indians were prowling around the house and she was washing, she poured boiling water out of the window onto them.’

Migrated with her parents in 1849 to Indiana.

1870 Federal Census. Age 39 living in Neosha Co., Kansas with husband Ralph, age 41 and 9 children.

Obituary
Died--December 30, 1880, at his home in Centerville township, Meosho county, of rheumatism of the heart, Ralph Dildine, in the 53rd year of his age.
The deceased was a native of Ohio, and with his father removed to Blackford county, Ind., which was then almost an unbroken wilderness; was married in 1850 to Catherine B. Rose, who with ten children remains to mourn his loss. He was a soldier in the war of the rebellion and followed Sherman in his march from Atlanta to the sea coast. He removed to Kansas in September, 1868 and settled on the farm where he died. His last illness was short but his sufferings were great. As a man he was industrious, self-reliant, kind hearted and generous, upright in his life, and in his last sickness expressed a willingness to die, saying it was all right with him and that he only regretted to leave his dear family.
